Electric Vehicle Outlook: The Road Ahead

This analysis of the auto industry related to vehicle electrification is intended to answer some of your burning questions. Who are the industry leaders now, and how has that changed? How closely will electric vehicle production meet expectations? How quickly can the EV transition occur, and how can the industry straddle production of both ICE vehicles and EVs? Will market demand for EVs meet government and climate goals? Leading off the conference is the savvy and engaging Daron Gifford, Partner with Plante Moran. Gifford will provide his insider’s outlook on the market and an overview of recent events and legislation shaping the automotive industry, armed with the data and expertise of one of the largest and most respected business advisory firms in the U.S.

Foxconn EV System’s Stamping Strategy for Contracted Manufacturing of Evs

Taiwanese megacompany Foxconn, which contract manufactures iPhones for Apple, has emerged as a contract manufacturer of electric vehicles, their assemblies, and components. Foxconn’s automotive annual revenue in 2021 was $12 billion. Michael Fabian, who directs the stamping operations at Foxconn EV Systems North American Operation, outlines the company’s stamping strategy.

10:10 a.m. - 10:40 a.m.

Lithium-Ion Battery Cell Format

One factor often cited as an obstacle to mainstream adoption of EVs has been range anxiety, brought on by a combination of limited battery range and an under-developed charging infrastructure. Michigan energy storage company Our Next Energy Inc – ONE puts the brakes to those fears with its development of long-range battery technology designed to propel a vehicle more than 600 miles per charge. ONE’s Dr. Najah George will share insights into the future of lithium-ion battery technology, as well as opportunities that the batteries present for stampers.

10:50 a.m. - 11:20 a.m.

Global Tier Supplier Gestamp’s Advanced Stamping of EV Components

When automakers input “G-e-s” into their smart phones, the devices auto populate “Gestamp.” The Spain-headquartered manufacturer is on nearly every OEM’s lidar, supplying critically engineered metal components. Gestamp is the largest global supplier of hot stamped parts, according to the company, and its sales revenues in 2022 grew by 32.5% to reach 10,725 million euro on its expertise. The company’s 40,000 employees work in 13 R&D centers and more than 100 plants in 24 countries. Paul Belanger, R&D Director North America, will delve into Gestamp’s forecasted changes coming to the Body Architecture and Battery Enclosure with the evolution of ICE to EV.

How to Be Press-Ready for EV Stamping and Forming

Schuler Sales Director Thomas Schmider unveils the press OEM’s capabilities to enable stampers to accelerate innovation and expand performance in EV production. Schmider will explain how impact extrusion presses, specific to the mass manufacturing of prismatic battery cell case and lid parts, can reach speeds 5 times faster than other press technologies and can save on material costs with material optimization. He also will explain how stampers can achieve production speeds up to 2,000 parts per minute, high overall equipment effectiveness, and material savings with deep drawing technology, specific to the mass manufacturing of cylindrical battery cell case and lid parts.

1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Big Tier 1 Automotive Supplier Takes on Big Transitional Challenge

Big Rapids Products has grown by stamping automotive exhaust system components and other ICE vehicles assemblies for years. Then COVID made impact, lowering demand, curtailing human resources, and disrupting the supply chain to boot. But that was not the only disruptor. The electrification of vehicles began to become apparent, and with it, the realization that the EV shift would likely bring changes to the company’s business model over time. VP of Sales Aaron Thompson will relay how the company evaluated its ICE vehicle stampings business, made changes to its business development strategy, and courted EV business from automakers and other Tier 1 suppliers. He'll relay how he and the company have encountered the changes that the EV market brought related to part size and complexity, and design changes.

Mitigating the Effects of Edge Splitting on Crush Performance in EV Components

This presentation delves into two forming problems dogging manufacturers working with AHSS materials for EV components: crush performance and edge splitting. The quality of the stamping and edge splitting behavior has a very significant effect on crush performance. Making matters worse, much stricter requirements for crush performance are imposed on EVs. Manufacturing technologies and materials for EV stamped parts may have to evolve significantly as EVs become more mainstream. Dr. Sergey Golovashchenko and Ph.D. candidate Saeid Nasheralahkami share the results of their joint research work on edge splitting and improving crush performance in EVs.
2:20 p.m. - 2:50 p.m.

Brutally Frank and Disarmingly Lively Panel Discussion

An honest discussion of challenges facing suppliers and OEMs, the manufacturing industry, and the automotive industry, related to the shift to EVs. Questions to be discussed include: How can manufacturers straddle both ICE vehicles and EV manufacturing? What is a supplier’s value proposition to automakers? How can manufacturers fend off competitors to stamping technology? What are optimal strategies in maintaining a robust workforce in a skilled worker shortage era? What are some lessons learned in manufacturing EV components and vehicles? What will the future of mobility look like? A panel of Manufacturers will bring their perspectives as suppliers, OEMs, and toolmakers. Panel includes: Eric Nelson, Lucid Motors; Steve Peplin, Talan Products; Donna Kuhr, PTM; Paul Belanger, Gestamp; Ray Davis, Motor City Stamping; and Fred Simonson, Victory Tool.
